Garage Storage & Organisation

ideal range double garage complex

A garage can be used for many things; it can act as your household storage room, a safe place to keep your vehicles, a workshop, or even a place to work out. We store many different things in our garages from toys, garage tools, and even seasonal decorations which we do not use as often.

But we need to think twice before storing items in our garages. If you don’t have proper insulation and ventilation, it can be challenging to control the temperature and moisture level in a garage. This means some items may be at risk of being damaged. To avoid this from happening, we have come up with a quick little list of what we should and should not store in our garages to stay on the safe side.

What is Safe to Store in Your Wooden Garage

Car and Garage Equipment:

If you have a car or any type of vehicle, a garage is a safe place to keep them. Other equipment such as tire inflators and other mechanics tools can also be stored here.

Gardening tools:

Tools such as shovels, hoses, lawnmowers, and pots can be safely stored in a garage. Additionally, soil and composts are also safe to keep as long as they are not broken or unsealed.

Outdoor items:

Items such as bikes, garden furniture, and kid’s toys are much more convenient to be kept in a garage. To fit everything, look to invest in a high-quality garage storage unit.

What not to Store in your Garage

Any items that cannot withstand fluctuating temperatures should not be stored in a garage. To get a clearer idea, let us go through the list more closely:

Food:

It is straightforward to see why storing food in a garage is not a good idea. The fluctuating temperature will cause food to go bad quickly, and let’s not forgot about the different kinds of pests it may attract.

Electronics:

Once again, a lack of moisture control and condensations can be harmful to any kind of electronic device. There is also a risk of electrocution if not careful or stored in an insulated garage.

Books and wooden furniture:

Wood is easily affected by cold and damp environments as well as humidity. These environments may cause cracks or moulds to grow on your furniture. It is regarded best to keep these items in a place where the temperature is more consistent.

Clothing and Beddings:

Many pests and insects such as mice and raccoons looking for a soft and warm place to nest – your clothing will make an ideal home for them.

Fragile items:

Such as photographs, paintings, and artwork can be easily damaged due to moisture, humidity, and dirt.

Refrigerators, Freezers, washing machines, and tumble dryers:

It might seem like a good idea to store these items in your garage, but there are some downfalls. Firstly, due to the hot temperature, your freezers will have to use up extra electricity which means higher energy bills.

Your tumble dryers and washing machine can cause condensation causing problems such as mould and rusting on your other items. It may even damage the garage itself.

Lastly, try not to store too many items in your garage.

If your garage is full and unmanageable, then this means you are already at risk of damaging those items and even your garage. Keep everything organised. Start by getting rid of old and damaged items. It is also a good idea to donate items that you haven’t used for a long time.

We hope these tips will help you keep your garages well organised, clean, safe, and tidy.
